Borah Elementary

Borah Lions ROAR!

We invest in each student to prepare, challenge and advance well-educated, resilient and future-ready citizens.

  • Welcome to Second Grade!

The second grade is dedicated to assuring that each child has the best possible opportunity to grow and learn. Our goal is that all students will be challenged to reach their full potential, experience success and discover the joy of life-long learning.  We are focused on our ROAR in Second Grade, and those are: Respectful, On Task, Always Safe and Responsible.

Reading skills and strategies are taught with the goal to improve comprehension. Time for independent silent reading, buddy reading, and for other oral reading is provided to improve fluency. In second grade children learn more about reading strategies in two separate segments of instruction called Reading Core time and Reading Switch.  Core time is the regular curriculum taught to all students.  Switch is a time that instruction is differentiated based on individual student needs.  All students participate in Switch and Core reading time.  You will find that your child enjoys both!

Math goals include knowing the addition and subtraction facts by memory to 18, place value to hundreds, patterns, problem-solving, money concepts, and critical thinking.  Re-grouping is a major focus in second grade.

Social Studies includes learning about groups, neighbors, communities and government, as well as other cultures.

Science units are Force and Motion, Weather, and Plants and Animals.

The weekly spelling list comes home every Monday with our classroom newsletter.  You may find a copy of our newsletter coming home in Homework folders on Mondays.

Lots of important learning takes place in second grade!
